Indonesia University of Education was established on October 20, 1954 in London, was inaugurated by the Minister of Education Teaching Mr. Muhammad Yamin. Originally named the Higher Education Teacher (PTPG), set against the backdrop of the history of the growth of the nation, who realized that the effort to educate and to make this nation an important part in the independence. Some of the reason for the founding PTPG include: First, after Indonesia achieved independence, the Indonesian people are very hungry for education. Second, the need for qualified teachers prepared and class universities to improve the quality of education that will pioneer the creation of a prosperous society.
UPI main building stems from the rubble a villa called the Villa Isola, a legacy of the former building before World War II. (In the struggle against the occupiers, the building was once used as the headquarters of the freedom fighters). Debris was rebuilt and later transformed into a building named Earth Siliwangi mansion with original architectural style.
This is the first time the youth gets gemblengan teacher education at the university level, as the realization of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Teaching (No. 35 742 dated 1 September 1954 on the establishment of PTPG / Colleges of Teacher Education).
At first PTPG headed by a dean who oversees several departments and or halls, namely:
Science Education
Physical Education;
Indonesian Language and Literature;
English Language and Literature;
Cultural History;
Definitely Nature;
Economy and State Law, and
Education Research Institute.
In accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No.. 40 718 / S at the time, stating that PTPG can be a stand-alone university or college within the university, along with the establishment of the University of Padjadjaran (ubuntu), on 25 November 1958 PTPG integrated into primary school by the name of Padjadjaran University Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (Guidance and Counseling).
To strengthen the procurement system of teachers and education personnel, various courses available at that time, the teacher education BI and B II, integrated into the Guidance and Counseling through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 6 of 1961. Furthermore FKIP develop into FKIP A and B. FKIP At the same time, also stood Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), which resulted in a dualism in teacher education institutions. To eliminate such dualism, on May 1, 1963 issued Presidential Decree No. 1 of 1963, which merged into the Institute of Guidance and Counseling and IPG Teacher Training and Education (Teachers' Training College) as the only university-level teacher education institutions. Guidance and Counseling A / B and IPG FKIP in Bandung eventually became the Institute of Teacher Training and Education Bandung (Bandung IKIP).
IKIP Bandung when it already has five faculties, namely the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences Teaching, Teaching Literature and Arts Faculty, Teaching Faculty exact science, and the Faculty of Engineering Science Teaching. The need for teachers increasingly urgent, as well as the growing desire to improve and equalize the ability of the teachers. This encourages open IKIP Bandung extension, between the years 1967 1970 London opening IKIP extension in almost all districts in West Java.
Role of Teachers 'Training College Dublin at the national level is increasingly prominent, after the government determined that IKIP Bandung be entrusted with the task of Trustees IKIP foster some IKIP outside Java, the Teachers' Training College London Branch of Banda Aceh, Palembang, Palangkaraya and Banjarmasin. To improve the quality of teachers, Teachers' Training College in London opened in 1970 Post Doctoral program through the establishment of a Post Doctoral Education (LPPD) that manages the PPS Program S2 and S3. In 1976 LPPD renamed the Graduate School, in 1981 changed to the Graduate School and a Masters in 1991 (PPS).
Structuring higher education programs undertaken by the government to implement a multiprogram and multistory, followed by opening the Teachers' Training College London Diploma of Education. To improve the qualifications of primary school teachers to be graduates of D II, the school year 1990/1991, organized Program D II Elementary School Teacher. Besides held in the Campus Earth Siliwangi program is also held in the Program Implementation Unit (PIU) in some former school SPG diintregarasikan to IKIP. To improve teacher qualifications kindergarten or play group in the year 1996/1997 London opening IKIP D Program II PGTK.
In line with government policy in the field of higher education that provides the mandate extension for the Institute of Education Personnel (LPTK) to be able to follow the changing demands and to anticipate any possible future, Teachers' Training College of Education University of London transformed into Indonesia through Presidential Decree No.. 124 of 1999 dated October 7, 1999.
To expand its reach in support of national development, UPI should be able to stand alone and acting. Determination is growing confidence in the ability he had. This commitment gives confidence to the government that has been able to stand up alone UPI and be given greater responsibility. With this belief, through Government Regulation no. 6 2004. UPI given autonomy to universities and State Owned Legal Entity (PT BHMN)
